Sweets to the sweet. She was a phenom right from the start. Trainer philcan2 was just as excited as the rest of us, thoroughly enjoying Provellian’s unbeaten five-race winning streak. From Alabama to Dubai, the dimunitive Provellian ignited all freshman filly fans anxious to test their young charges be it homebred or 2YO draft horse alike. She’s a classic pacesetter and after her Maiden Special Weight dance, she reeled off four straight stakes wins, including a Grade 1 over the turf and two Grade 2 events over the main track. It looked like she was the complete package -- the daughter of Machiavellian had the genes to melt a Simmer’s heart and the apparent fire and determination befitting a top-tier performer. Alas, things went astray -- her stamina was questioned after tasting her first defeat over 7 1/2 furlongs. After another even effort over the dirt, trainer philcan2 sent his silver filly back onto the lawn in the very competitive Equinics’ Hermes Winged Flight. Over a mile, Provellian stayed the distance to get caught at the wire by a bare length. The performance waylayed any doubts however -- this filly had versatility stamped all over her.

Provellian did not run in Murf Ray’s Breeders Bowl Juvenile Turf Filly score. Her trainer instead spotted Provellian carefully, winning the Grade 1 Graduation Stakes a week before the BB. She finished up the year adding two more added-money events -- her juvenile record of eight wins from 15 starts was thoroughly the most convincing of all the Juvenile Turf Filly nominees. She only finished out of the money once in eight career turf attempts -- an impressive record in anyone’s book as her 2000 campaign was long, difficult, yet tremendously successful. Congrats, philcan2, as your Sim sweetheat, Provellian, wins Champion 2YO Turf Filly honors.
