School Kris Jets His Way to the Eclipse

During my stay across the pond this fall, I learned a quaint new expression. When one athlete exhibits dominance over another, they describe him or her as taking their opponent to school. What better expression to use when describing School Kris, the champion turf male.
Mark Twain's words hung in the air at the beginning of the year. School Kris' trainer Theatrical said, "The rumors of his demise are exaggerated." The response to the question, "Are Kris' best days behind him?" always remained the same, an emphatic "NO!". Observers worldwide began doubting the talented colt. He had finished 1999 with seven consecutive defeats and had won only one of his last ten starts heading into the year 2000. Still, Theatrical rebuffed the critics, telling them to just watch.
No sooner had the furies gathered at the gates than School Kris exorcised the demons of 1999 by triumphing in his first start of the New Year. However, many fans still considered him the prey not the hunter as he failed to win in his next three starts. However, those starts included three stakes placings, one of which on a Grade II runner-up result on his less favored surface, the dirt.
Springtime proved more favorable to School Kris' prospects as he began showing the form that made him a star. A trip to sunny California yielded his first graded stakes victory of the year in the GII Arcade Handicap. The betting public still favored the grizzled warhorse, sending him off as the odds-on favorite. After two tune-up stakes, School Kris returned to graded company scoring a runner-up finish in the GIII Simon and Simon Cap before coasting to victory in the GII All Comers Stake. As the summer drew near, School Kris hit a wall failing to record a victory in his next six starts. However, his efforts were not completely in vane as he garnered GIII show awards. The summer heat lit a fire under the champion, though, and he waltzed to an impressive victory in the GI Eddie O Cap in California. After an unsuccessful foray on the dirt, School Kris returned to his beloved turf and took Chicago by storm, winning the GI Windy City Turf Classic in wire to wire fashion. A trip across the Pacific Ocean landed School Kris in Queensland where he lost a head bob in the GII Cane Toad Stakes. A trip back to the United States was accompanied by much pomp and circumstance as School Kris brought honor and glory to his home state of California by winning Equinic gold in the GI Protheus Gift. A trip to Belgium and then Utah yielded School Kris his fifth graded stakes win of the year in the GII Utah BB Mile. The frequent flyer miles continued to accumulate as a trip to Victoria, Australia preceded a return to Kentucky for the coveted Breeders Bowl. Kris could only steal second in the GI Breeders Bowl Mile. However, our champion was not done with his world tour as a trip to Epsom saw Kris bring home his fourth GI of the year as he captured the Because I said So Stakes. School Kris rounded out his winning resume with two more non-graded stakes wins in California and Germany before the end of the year.
Proud owner/trainer Theatrical had only a few simple sentiments about his stellar son of Kris(GB) saying, "He is a warrior with an unparalleled heart. You can't say anything better than he is a champion." I couldn't agree more.
