1999 Sim Eclipse Champions:  Where Are They Now?

By- Roys Mansur

Last year, the best of 1999 were honored for their achievements in the Sim world. Nine horses and one trainer were named as Eclipse Award Champions. Theatrical was named as the best trainer of 1999 and he continues to do well today as one of the very best of the Sim trainers. He just crossed the 100-win milestone and joined only three other trainers that have reached that distinction. It is, however, the horses that I really want to talk about in this article.

Last year, these were the horses at the top of their game and everyone knew their names. So where are last year’s award winners today? Lets take a look at how they are doing or if they are doing at all.............

Two Year Old Colt

The Eclipse Award for Champion Two Year Old Colt went to Yodel Elf by El Gran Senor. This colt had an extraordinary season in 1999 winning the Breeders Bowl Juvenile (G1), the Future Stakes (G1), The Ferrara Special, and The Truck Driven Man Handicap. He was also second in the Sparkling Wine Stake (G1).

Today Yodel Elf # 25916 - is still racing under the colors of Rdetriano. He has a record of 22-8-3-1 and has earned $1,133,275. He seems to have dropped in value somewhat as he ran second in an allowance/3 million race his last time out. His most recent stakes victory was on October 7, 2000 and his best recent speed figure is a 100.

Two Year Old Filly

Mother Story #28499 was the winner of the 1999 Eclipse Award for Champion Two Year Old Filly. A daughter of Wild Again she won The Breeders Bowl Juvenile Filly (G1), The Frickazee Stakes (G1), The Movieland Starlet (G1), and The Golden Red Stakes (G3).

Today, Mother Story is still campaigning out on the racetrack, although she has not run since November 23. Her best recent finish was a second in an overnight stakes in South Dakota. Her best recent speed figure is a 103 and she has earned $1,703,705. She is still owned and trained by Aaafarms and has a race record of 24-10-2-1.

Three Year Old Colt

The Eclipse Award for Champion Three Year Old Colt and 1999 Sim Horse of the Year went to Billg51’s Gatling Prospector. A son of Storm Cat, Gatling Prospector # 8434, was the runaway winner for the 3 year old award. In his march toward the Eclipse Award for 1999, he won the Breeders Bowl Classic (G1), the Middle Jewel Stakes (G1), The Yugo Astroturf (G1), The Simulatedsports Stakes (G2), and The Dogberry Special (IRE) Stakes. He also placed second in The Bluegrass Derby (G1), The Del Webb Derby (G2) and was third in The New Yorker (G2), The Swamps Stakes (G1), and The Indiana Derby.

Today, Gatling Prospector has been seen mostly in allowance races. His best recent finish was a second, in a wide-open allowance in Texas, and his best speed figure showing is a 92. He still resides in the barn of Billg51 and has a record of 27-6-5-4 and has earned a total of $4,476,120.

Three Year Old Filly

Pharsea Seattle #8943 was the winner of the Eclipse for Champion Three Year Old Filly of 1999. The daughter of Seattle Slew won her award by winning the Bell Dame Stakes (G1), The Exam Stakes (G1), The Girls Cap (G3), the FL BB Distaff Stakes, the Tis Juliet’s SS and UB Got Spanked Stakes, the CA Oaks, and the California 278 Stakes. She finished second in the Fast Feline (G1), the Fence Fryer Stake (G3), the Western Jove Handicap, and the IN BB Oaks. She was also third in the Arizona 264 Special, and the Maryland 250 Special.

Today, Pharsea Seattle is still on the track and recently won the Dubai 900 Challenge. Her best recent speed figure is a 97 and she can still be found in the barn of owner/trainer Theboss. She has a lifetime record of 48-12-6-7 and has won $1,511,779 as of this writing.

Older Horse

Champion Older Horse of 1999 went to New Slew #15004. Owned and trained by Liam this horse was sensational in 1999. A son of Seattle Slew, he won the Jockey Guild Gold Cup (G1), the Oaktree Handicap (GI), the California Handicap (G1), the Glenn Handicap (G1), the Kinglike Special, the General Holmes Stakes, and the Maxxed Platinum Plate Cap. He also finished second in the IDE Special and was third in the Tinseltown Cup (G3).

New Slew is still going strong. With a record of 41-16-4-3 and earnings of $4,692,590, New Slew is still in Liam’s stable and is still the stable star. He won the Grade II Willing and Able Stakes over 9 furlongs in Northern Florida his last time out with a speed figure is 114. This horse does not seem to have lost a step.

Older Mare

The Eclipse Award for Champion Older Mare went to Theatrical’s One Attack. A daughter of Gone West, she shamed the competition by winning the Breeders Bowl Distaff (G1), the Canadian Distaff Turf (G1), the Dancing Idiot (G1), the Old Man River BB (G3), the Sure Will Handicap (G3), the Dzurilla Appreciation Stakes, the Arizona Special Stakes, and the Iowa Handicap Stakes. She also finished second in the Princess Di Handicap (G2), the Natural Spring Stakes (G3), the Other Spa Stakes (G3), the Short Female Sprint (G3), the Monrovia Stakes (G3), the KRC Tribute Stakes, the Epsom Challenge Stakes, the California Handicap Stakes, and the OK Bayou Handicap Stakes. If that wasn’t enough she finished third in the Nevada Special Stakes, the Hail The Ruckus Stakes, and the California 187 Handicap Stakes.

Deciding the mare had achieved enough Theatrical bred her last spring to Sadler’s Wells and her colt is the rising star Saddle Me Up. While he has yet to achieve anything like his Mama, he is young and on the improve and just recently won a Graded race. He has been in the money 7 of 11 starts and has already won almost $173,000. He certainly has big hooves to fill.

Turf Horse

Next on the list is the 1999 Eclipse winner of the Champion Turf Horse of the Year. Well known to most, this star of the Win stable was another overwhelming pick amongst the voters last year. Making 22 starts, Enough Knock #14290, won the Canada Mile (G1), The Brian Ex Birthday Special (G1), The Late Night Turf Classic (G1), the Bottle Rocket Stakes (G3), the Oceanport Stakes (G3), The Kentuckiana Cup Mile (G3), The Good and Plenty Stakes, and The Beach Breeders Bowl Stakes. He also finished second in the Japan Sprint (G1), the Japan Cup (G1), the Japan Mile (G1), the Eddie O Handicap (G1), the Fu Man Chu Stakes (G2), and the Winchester Handicap (G3). He finished off his incredible year with a third in the Breeders Bowl Mile (G1), the Fort Lauderdale Handicap (G3), and the Best Jockey Mile Stakes.

Today, Enough Knock, a son of Sadler’s Wells, is another that is still going strong. He won a stake, two races back in New South Wales, with a speed figure of 118 and doesn’t seem to have lost a step. He is still residing in the Win stable and now sports a record of 48-22-11-7 and has lifetime earnings of $6,623,890.

Turf Mare

The Eclipse Award for Champion Turf mare went to a daughter of Kingmambo, Seattle Hit # 12919. Owned and trained by Alex, this mare won her award by racing against the best turfers in the world male or female. On her way to winning the Eclipse, Seattle Hit, won the Japan Cup (G1), the Canada Turf (G1), The Undefeated Filly Stakes (G1), the Island Handicap (G2), the Prince Pablo Stakes, Frank’s Own Derby, The DeBee 'Cap, and the Kentucky 222 Stakes. She placed second in the Estrogen Stakes, and the Polynesian Flyer Special and was third in the Miami Beach Turf Stakes (G2), the Wander Kind Handicap, and the Sinsofthefather Special.

Today, Seattle Hit still sticks her head out of the number one stall in the Alex stable. On the 30th of December in 2000 she won a California Chris Antley Memorial Series, a Grade II, by almost five lengths with a speed figure of 109. Her lifetime record stands at 53-16-8-10 and she has bankrolled $5,307,753. She still loves to travel and there is no telling where in the world we will see her next - but we will, see her again.

Sprinter

The Champion Sprinter of 1999 was Cencall’s pride and joy, # 14735 - Lever Sparky. This work horse son of Clever Trick, raced all over the world and was given no quarter. He earned each and every victory. He rolled to victory in the Breeders Bowl Sprint (G1), the Thanks to Aussie, Socalslew and Unbridled Stakes (G2), the Voice Of Doom Handicap, the Tri For The Gold Special, the Above Question Handicap, the Woodland Adventure Stakes, the Luskin Star Stakes, the White Russian Stakes, the Deputy Minister Cap, and the Land Of The Free Special. As if that wasn’t enough, he finished second in the That’s Phenominal Stakes (G2), the San Valenzuala Breeders Bowl Stakes (G2), the Scottsdale BB Stakes, and the Master Dom Handicap. He also finished third in the Japan Mile (GI), the San Pascal Handicap (G2), the Kathy Lee Sweatshop Sprint (G3), and the High Comedy Special.

Today, Lever Sparky still races under the Cencall colors. He finished third his LTO in a Louisiana Stakes on January 6, 2001. He also managed a good second in last year’s Breeder’s Bowl Sprint, a Grade I earning a 116 speed figure. He doesn’t seem to have slowed down a bit and I am sure we will see more of this great horse. His record as of this writing is 61-24-9-8 and he has earned $3,039,363. He is truly a remarkable horse.
