When Preakness told his friends that he was taking his unraced mare Carob Gal to one of the world's best sire in Seeking The Gold they all thought he was mad. The unraced mare appeared to have only average breeding on paper and his friends though he was crazy to spend so much money taking her to such a top sire. But Preakness saw the potential in the mare's bloodline with legendary sires such as Northern Dancer, In Reality and Graustark prominent. So he ignored their advice and proceded with his plan.

The time just flew by between when the mare gave birth to a striking filly and the day of her first race start. Preakness had waited eagerly for this day and with confidence in his filly he named her Seekin Gal. She was virtually friendless in the betting ring with the bookies giving her little hope and posting odds of 10/1 about her. She jumped alright and sat a length or two off the leaders before making her move upon entering the stretch and cruised past them for an easy victory. When Preakness looked at the time of 59.2 seconds for the 1000m he knew he had a top class horse on his hands as that time was sensational for 2yo's at that point in the season.

She won her next 2 starts easily in allowance company before progressing to graded stakes races. Her 4th career start was in a Grade II race at Vermont over 1100m. However this was her 4th run in the space of 11 weeks and this perhaps brought about her undoing. She was back in the second half of the field early although she was not far from the leaders. But with her heavy schedule of racing she was unable to display her usual turn of foot in the stretch but she still ran a gallant second. This was to be her only defeat as a 2yo.

After that defeat she was a touch distressed and Preakness decided it was in the filly's best interests to have a long break. She was away from the race track for nearly 3 months before making her much anticipated return to the track in the summer. She resumed in a Grade I race at British Columbia where she would begin to really show what she was capable of. A comfortable victory in this race was followed up by successive Grade I victories in New York, The second of which was the Breeder's Bowl Fillies race.. This put her record at 7 starts for 6 wins and 1 second with over $1million in prizemoney. She was put out to paddock again after those victories and that is where she has stayed until this date. Another interesting fact about Seekin Gal is that in all of her 7 races not once has she started the race as favourite.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about this filly is that her 3 Grade I victories have been over varying distances from 1300m to 1700m and on each occasion she has posted exceptional times. This not only makes her very versatile, but it means she is also very consistent. She has yet to be tried on turf but her sire Seeking The Gold has produced many exceptional grass runners also. If she is just as good on turf it will add even more to her versatility and make her a extremely powerful 3yo prospect. One gets the feeling we may be talking about her again when the Eclipse Awards for 2002 come around.
