Six furlongs...three quarters of a mile...the measure of a
champion. It is thoroughbred racing's equivalent of the 100 meter dash for
humans. The great sprinters, both human and equine, are held in the
highest regard by the sporting world. Olympic champions Marion Jones and
Maurice Greene are often called "the fastest (woman/man) on Earth."
And
so it is with horse racing. Catamount1's big bay rocket, Smokey
Project, can rightfully claim the title "fastest horse on Earth."
The muscular son of Arctic Tern was a perfect five for five at six furlongs in
2001. And, like a true champion, he saved his best performance for his
biggest test of the year, The Breeders Bowl Sprint.
To be the best you
must beat the best. Smokey Project did just that. His Breeders Bowl
Sprint victory came at the expense of what many consider the finest field of
sprinters ever assembled. Among the vanquished were Prospector Tackle who
is closing in on three million dollars in career earnings, 1999 Eclipse sprint
king Sparky Lever, 2000 Eclipse sprint champ Blue Ant, the race favorite, and
the surprisingly tenacious Square Fuzz.
Stalking the leaders
through torrid splits of :21 and :43.3, Smokey Project collared pace setting
Square Fuzz an eighth away, said hello and goodbye, and drew off to a two length
triumph in a Breeders Bowl record 1:08.2. Blue Ant was a tiring third, 3
3/4 lengths behind.
Far from being a one trick pony, Smokey Project
displayed two traits of a champion throughout the year...tremendous speed and
unwavering determination. His seasonal record of 17-8-5-3 speaks
volumes. It includes two Grade one wins and many, many other splendid

Suffice to say Smokey Project is more than worthy of his new title, Eclipse
Sprint Champion!
Now six years old, Smokey Project shows no signs of
slowing down. So, if you're visiting your local track and see a big brown
blur followed by a vapor trail, chances are it's Smokey!
