By- Shag Owner capeside stood tall when in 2002, at this time, the greatest 3yo horse, Buda With The Slew, took home his Eclipse Award for 3yo of the year. It set a precedent that would seemingly never be repeated. After being the first horse to win the BB Juvenile, and proceed to win the Bluegrass Derby, Buda With The Slew was already a remarkable horse. His legacy would live on forever in the sim. He proceeded to be arguably the greatest horse in sim history when he took home the 3yo Eclipse Award, after taking the 2yo Award the year before, in 2001. The remarkable, nay, the impossible, had happened. But just when it seemed like Buda With The Slew would be the only horse to accomplish this impossible feat, and little 2yo looked on with large eyes. Tower Storm. Tower Storm began his 3yo campaign with what would turn out to be a rough start in the young 3yo's career. He entered the Silver Fence Derby, a G3 race, to get back into racing action. He ran one of his worst career races, a 3rd, which would be a rarity for him. The race would be won by Kokamon, but Tower Storm would get his revenge, and in a much bigger way. Tower Storm would pick up his Bluegrass Derby insurance in the next race. The Silver Charm Challenger, one of the 30 Equinics races, would be Tower Storm's next target. A win in this G1 race would assure Tower Storm an entrance into the Bluegrass Derby, and owner lonespeed was hoping that the former would happen. He took the race with a 103 SP, 7 SPs higher than 2nd place. If this race did not show his dominance, he would in his next 2 races. Tower Storm would not win his next start, in the Florida Derby. He and the rest of the 3yo class, including archrival Ray Of Pye, would learn their lesson about pace when Fusaichi Devil, at 11/1, took the field of 14 wire to wire. Storm's next start, in the California Derby, is where he would exact his revenge on Kokamon. Kokamon would finish 10th of the 12 in the race, while Tower Storm would win. However, this prep race was much more important for him, because he got his first taste of the upcoming competition in a horse named Unbridled Fury. 2 weeks later, Tower Storm turned in a career workout, running 6f in :58 1/5. The time would be an indication of what was to come. May 4, 2001: A day that will live in lonespeed's heart forever. Hotwalker Juan Pelota woke up and walked into stall 15, only to find that Tower Storm was more than ready to run. It showed later that day, in the 10f Bluegrass Derby. Breaking from post 15 in the 20 horse field, Fusaichi Devil would set the pace, but Tower Storm would stick around, and eventually head for the lead. Unbridled Fury closed like a banshee, but he wasn't enough for Tower Storm or the 116.5 SP, higher than any previous Bluegrass Derby. This win over some of the top 3yo's in the sim would propel him to the top of the class, if he weren't already there. His quest for the triple jewel would continue, but be denied, in his next race. The Middle Jewel Stakes. Unbridled Fury ran a career race to deny Tower Storm of his Triple Jewel, squeaking by in the stretch of the race. A career best run for both horses, and unfortunately for Tower Storm, he was on the losing end. He would not return to run in the New Yorker, but instead lonespeed decided to rest him until the $500,000 Princess Cup. He ran another great race, winning it, but it would come at a cost. Pelota noticed that he had not eaten for days following the race, and lost the shine on his beautiful coat. His first off the board finish would come in his next race, the Swamps Stakes. He ran 9th and clearly he was not himself. He would return to his normal ways in his next race, running 2nd in the Travellers Stakes. But that would be the end of his great performances. Lonespeed switched him to the turf for his next start, where he ran 11th. He returned to New York for the Jockey Guild Gold Cup, but ran 9th at odds of 12/1 in a prep for the Breeders Bowl Classic. Unfortunately, Tower Storm took a bad step 1/16 from the finish and was taken out of training. He rested for the rest of the year, and has just begun light training again. But his mark on the 3yo circuit had been made. Winner of the BB Juvenile, Equinics, California Derby, Princess Cup, and Bluegrass Derby, Tower Storm is deserving of the 3yo championship.
