A classic horse, one that cannot be faulted in their breeding, in their running, and in their contributions to the sport. Western Groom, Eclipse winner for Older Male horse, is one of these classic horses and has proven it with an incredible year of racing. Western Groom himself is a bay eight-year-old son of Gone West out of a Blushing Groom(FR) mare. His trainer, Hijacked, has trained "Western" since winning him in one of Mike's betting contests. Hijacked was realistic about the colt's chances in the beginning, "I figured if he doesn't turn out I could always breed him." But the colt turned out. Cumulating in 2002, Western Groom ran for seven wins, four of those Grade One victories, winning over distances from 8-10 furlongs. He also boasts a recent Grade Two win in the Saunders Stakes over 9 furlongs on the turf to start off the new year. Western Groom started the year with a ranking of 22 and ended it, after seven wins and four Grade One victories, with a ranking of 3. To pick out just one victory has exceptional would do no justice to this horse, as part of his greatness is with the consistency in which he runs and wins.
This horse might be faulted for his fourth place finish in the Breeder's Bowl
Classic, but his trainer explains, ".this guy has won a Grade One. prepping for
the Breeder's Bowl, so I was a little shocked when he didn't win the Breeder's
Bowl. After noticing that most of the favorites that day ran up the track, I
felt better. The next race he gave the Bowl winner Horn Knee Sal a good beating
[in the Keen Boy Stakes]."
