The champion older mare in the world is a 7 year old mare by Sky Classic out of a Coastal mare from Yishun Stables named GEORGE’S BURGLARS. The champion started her season with a bang, winning the Gd.3, Be Forwarned, in Ontario in her first race of the year and closed out her championship with a powerful victory in the Gd.1, Tipsters Challenge in Kentucky. In between, she raced an additional fifteen races and finished her year with eight wins including four graded wins and all others in listed stakes. Her connections kept her busy, but did limit her traveling, with most of her racing done on the east coast, with victories over five different tracks but Florida, where she won 3 stakes and New York, where she won 2 stakes, seemed to be home.

The classy mare has been a top distaff handicap runner, especially in probably the most contentious mile races, but has been able to stretch her tactical speed an extra furlong and win over the classic American distaff distance of nine furlongs. As sometimes happens, this champion had a humble beginning and could have been claimed, not to long ago, as she was by Yishun Stables for $75,000. At that time, she was a bit of a mile turf specialist, but her new trainer noticed that she showed a liking for softer tracks and through this, her true potential was discovered. In the words of her trainer, Yishun, “one race day, the turf course was waterlogged and her race was moved to the main track, and she took to it like a duck to water and we have never looked back.” Yeah, never looked back, right, except to see how far she would win by.

GEORGE’S BURGLARS season began in Ontario with a gate to wire win in the Gd.3, Be Forewarned, where she led all the way, but had someone at her throat the entire race. That one must have taken something out of her, because as one of the favorites in the Equinics, she never fired and was beaten by over eleven lengths. She next went to her favorite track and reeled off, two consecutive wins in overnight handicaps as a prep for one of the major spring distaff races, the Gd.1, Orange Blossom in Arkansas. In that race, she willingly stalked a brisk early pace and exploded at the eighth pole to win going away by three lengths in an outstanding time of 1:40 3/5 for the mile and a sixteenth, garnering a speed rating of #124. She was then given a two-month freshening and returned to the races in New Jersey for their major distaff races, the Bumblebee Classic and Wizzer. She picked up checks in both races but may have been a bit short in her training or just ran into her then red-hot rival, West The Escort, on bad weekends. A quick van ride across the river to New York, produced a return to form and a tough loss by a shortening ¾ of a length in the Gd.1, Steadhemp. She stayed in the Big Apple and resumed her winning ways with a dominating performance in the New York 1446 Special, with an impressive front running victory. Her next two outings were uncharacteristic of her talents but she came back with a mission, and toyed with a top field, winning the Gd.1, Superfilly in a hand ride and then returning to Florida to win another overnight stake, the Florida 1537 Handicap. She appeared to be beautifully prepped for the Breeders Bowl but was a distant second in that event as well a placing in an overnight stake in Upper New York, right after the Breeders Bowl. She then went to put an exclamation point on her season by shipping in to Delaware on DelPenn Champions Day and the open, Gd.1, Delaware Mile against the boys. Though she ran a speed rating of #119 that day, the boys put on a blistering show to leave her finishing 4th, off the board, but picking up a check for her game effort. To close out her season, she shipped to Kentucky and put on a clinic for her division, winning the Gd.1, Tipster Challenge in 1:47 1/5 for the nine panels. It was a superlative season for the champion; she danced all the dances, dodged no bullets and even faced colts in an outstanding show of sportsmanship by her connections.

GEORGE’S BURGLARS and Yishun Stables are to be congratulated for their well planned and executed season. The tough race-mare was able to stay healthy and in near top form all year, while racing against the best mares in the toughest races at the most prestigious racetracks and fulfilling her destiny with greatness because her trainer saw something in her eyes, claimed her, and now has the satisfaction of being an Eclipse Award winner and a new member of the Hall of Fame.
