On winning this coveted award, the competition was fierce with four other great horses vying for the coveted trophy, however Sunken Treasure was selected as the worthy winner. Bred by bill gulch with classic bloodlines, he started his career back in 2000 with a win at his first outing. His first year gave him three wins but one wonders whether bill gulch was maybe a little worried that he may be a little short of championship class. When asked though, he stated that he was always confident that his champ would get there with maturity. During the next season, 'Treasure slowly but surely started on the upward trend and had a Grade 3 to his credit. His 2001 year ended with him having posted eight wins and a worst placing of fifth -- he was a model of consistency and according to his owner was fast becoming one of his favourites. He had proved himself to be not only a good money spinner, but he had also been easy to train. At age five, 2002 was the year all the training and perseverance came together. After a poor run first up, 'Treasure hit his straps and six stakes in a row followed. This streak was followed by a not so good effort, but he quickly got back on track with two more stakes in a row, proving that he was still up there. Two Grade 1 races followed and, though beaten, he was not disgraced. His last run of the year gave him his ninth stakes for the 2002 season. Bill states that this was when he knew without any doubts he had one right up there with the best. The 2003 season arrived and so did Sunken Treasure. In the springtime, he reeled off two Grade 1 wins in a row (Keg Of Guinness and Doomben Cup) and then, to top it off, 'Treasure finished with another Grade 1 (Pennsylvania Handicap) to end the season in a blaze of glory. He also ran a fast-closing second in the Breeders Bowl Mile(G1). The only unplaced run of his campaign was over a yielding track and bill stated that he only ran him because he had been set for the race and thus went ahead with the run. So a great season for SUNKEN TREASURE and a worthy champion. Sunken Treasure we salute you. Click here to view Sunken Treasure's Career PPs
