By- Glenn Craven Even the mighty, on occasion, stumble. Yet when they are as mighty, as awe-inspiring, as phenomenal as famed racemare Storm Dog, their exploits cannot be ignored. Storm Dog, the now-5-year-old wonder daughter of Storm Cat, has backed up her phenomenal 2002 campaign - in which she not only was 3-year-old Filly of the Year, but the Sim Eclipse winner as Horse of the Year - by being named the 2003 Older Female of the Year. She also is the 2003 Turf Female of the Year. Winning the award was perhaps a foregone conclusion once she claimed her second straight Grade-1 Breeders' Bowl Mile, defeating many of the best race horses in the world of either gender. And the honor is hardly tarnished by her inaugural effort of 2004, a surprising third of seven in Arizona's Granny Drill Stakes. She's still the mare with which all trainers wish they could work; the queen of the track against which the accomplishments of all future fillies and mares will be measured. Storm Dog's 2002 campaign was one of near-perfection. She raced nine times, winning eight and placing just once. And her 2003 effort was nearly as dominating. Though she merely showed in back-to-back efforts at the start of the campaign -- in the Sexy Muffins Classic (G1) and Good Vista Handicap (G3) -- Storm Dog won seven of her next eight, including her repeat in the BB Mile. The only blemish on the remainder of her season was a sixth-place run, the only non-paying finish of her career, in France's Jack The Man Stakes against males. She captured four Grade-1 titles, a Grade-2 and a Grade-3 among her seven stakes wins. She raised her career win count to 18-for-26; her career earnings to more than $3.8 million. The season was enough to not only boost her above fellow nominees Angel's Vixen (winner of six consecutive stakes races, three graded), English Bark (Grade-1 and -2 winner), multiple stakeswinner Hole Jove(IRE) and Grade-1 winner Swill Wavering for the title of best older female, but almost by default to secure her nomination as best turf female of the year. While her sire, Storm Cat, is a sim legend with stakeswinners on both dirt and grass, Storm Dog's dam provided plenty of turf influence. By Fappiano out of a Roberto mare, she has foaled one of the most dominant turf runners of sim history. In fact, nobody knows whether Storm Dog can be competitive on the main track. Each of the mare's 25 career starts has taken place on the lawn, where she has won 18 times and earned more than $3.857 million. What will Storm Dog accomplish in 2004? Another win streak to rival the seven straight stakes crowns she claimed at ages 2 and 3? A ninth, or 10th, or 11th Grade 1 win? A run on the dirt? It's impossible to know.
The only thing that is certain is that, should she be
nominated again for Eclipse honors a year from now,
probably no one would be surprised.
